Flexible Working Arrangements: Reflections from Zambia
Abstract
In today's world of advanced technology, flexible working arrangements have fundamentally changed the modern workplace unlike the traditional employment norms. These flexible working arrangements foster diversity, inclusion, and innovation and provide employees with autonomy over their work schedules while achieving organizational objectives, attracting talent, improving operational efficiency, and promoting work–life balance. Drawing on recent studies in my role as human resource practitioner, this chapter examines the benefits and challenges of flexible working arrangement, how they have been applied to improve organizational goals which has been supported by evidence from the COVID-19 pandemic, diverse industries, and practical case studies. During the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, many countries practiced flexible working hours as opposed to the customary “9 to 5" model. This included measures like staff working through mobile phones, social media platforms, and information technology programs like the human resource information system. The use of non-traditional settings, using technology such as laptops and iPads, was largely used remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic to get the job done, while also eradicating human–human viral transmission through physical distancing. In the post-COVID-19 pandemic era, many countries have not developed policies on flexible working hours to replicate those implemented during the pandemic. Employers have the discretion to implement practical measures, and a flexible and remote working system, including one that provides necessary resources for employees with disabilities, has the potential to replicate or even surpass the desired work productivity.
